Traveling Tokyo as a Couple: 10 Nights of Food, Fun, and Full-Throttle Adventures

Welcome to the wild, wonderful world of Tokyo – a city where tradition and tech collide in the most dazzling ways. We spent 10 unforgettable nights exploring Japan’s capital, and whether it was sipping smooth sake or racing go-karts through Shibuya, every moment reminded us why we chose this full-time travel life.

If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo (especially as a couple or for luxury-seeking travelers), here’s a deep dive into our experience – complete with recommendations, reflections, and the must-dos you won’t find in every guidebook.

Where We Stayed: Finally, a Breather

After hopping through cities, we gave ourselves a gift: ten nights in one place. Tokyo was the perfect city to pause and soak it all in. While we won’t name our exact hotel here (DM us if you’re curious), we picked a centrally located spot near Shinjunku that allowed us to explore by foot, train, or scooter.

Settling down in one location gave us a chance to actually live Tokyo – not just sightsee.

Food, Glorious Food: Tokyo’s Culinary Scene

Let’s be real: Tokyo is a foodie’s playground. Here are some of the standout bites and lessons:

Ichiran Ramen – Our Daily Ritual

You know you love a place when you visit it four or five times. Ichiran is like the Chick-fil-A of ramen – consistent, delicious, and wildly efficient. Here’s how it works:

Order at a vending machine-style kiosk
Wait until your number is called
Slide into a single-person booth with partitions on either side
Receive your noodles through a small curtain, with no human interaction

It’s oddly meditative. And yes, there are little wooden signs for basic phrases so you never have to speak. (Introverts, rejoice.)

Tokyo Nightlife

Sushi – Hold the Rolls

Sushi in Japan is nothing like in the U.S. Forget spicy tuna or rainbow rolls – in Tokyo, it’s all about nigiri: fresh fish on seasoned rice. That’s it. And it’s perfect.

We took a sushi-making class (via Get Your Guide – Link Here to Tour) and were gently corrected on our Western-style assumptions. We rolled (pun intended) with it.

Sake – Smooth as Silk

We always thought sake tasted like rubbing alcohol. Turns out, we were drinking the wrong stuff. In Japan, real sake is smooth, flavorful, and almost too easy to drink. We’re officially ruined for U.S. sake now.

Food Tour – Discovering Local Favorites

We booked a Tokyo food tour via Get Your Guide, and it opened doors to places we never would’ve found. Grilled skewers, savory pancakes, sweet mochi – we tried it all. Sumo Show – Front Row Feels

One of our first nights, we scored front-row seats to an intimate sumo wrestling event – all-you-can-eat buffet included. These massive athletes were landing mere inches from our plates. There was even a lottery to spar with a sumo (just for fun) – we didn’t win, but let’s be honest, our survival instincts were grateful.

TeamLab – Get Lost in Light

If you’re into digital art or just want to feel like you’re walking through a dream, go to TeamLab Planets or Borderless. There are no maps, and the rooms literally change around you if you stay long enough. Think mirrored floors, floating lanterns, optical illusions. It’s a sensory masterpiece. Nightlife & Speakeasies: Tokyo After Dark

Tokyo is a night owl’s city. We dipped into:

Hidden speakeasies were plentiful here. My favorite spot was Bar Composition. They had some of the best cocktails and a huge menu.
Cigar lounges …. so many! My favorite was Cigar & Rock in the Shibuya, Tokyo, area. Small but mighty with a good selection of sticks and GREAT 80’s music!
Rooftop bars with skyline views that make your jaw drop. We enjoyed an amazing night at the Bellustar Bar, Tokyo, in the Shinjuku area that had SICK views of the Tokyo Skylines and amazing craft cocktails. Book around sunset to get the golden hour views before the night skyline

Tokyo Mario Kart in the Rain

The Ultimate Highlight: Tokyo Mario Kart in the Rain

If we had to pick one experience to recommend – this is it.

We suited up in full costume (yes, as Tiger the Tiger from Winnie the Pooh) and hit the streets in go-karts. At night. In the pouring rain.

We drove through Shibuya Crossing – three times. Imagine Times Square, but even more chaotic. Add in traffic, rain-slicked streets, neon lights, and the sheer absurdity of our outfits.

Was it ridiculous? Yes. Dangerous? Maybe. Unforgettable? Absolutely.

Practical Tips for Tokyo Travelers

Get an IC Card (like Suica or Pasmo) for subway travel – it’s easy and accepted everywhere.
Book activities in advance – especially TeamLab and Mario Kart (they sell out fast).
Cash is still king in many places. Always carry some yen.
Try the speakeasies – but be prepared to hunt them down. Many are unmarked and hidden.
Stay connected – rent a portable Wi-Fi device or get an eSIM.
